When I started taking pictures of grasses and leaves, I realized how important bokeh is in this genre. I chose the lens with what I thought was the most expressive background blur, the Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/50 ZE. I chose it over the big name Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM and Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM for its bokeh.

I photographed with a Canon EOS 5D mark II, wasn’t afraid of the lack of autofocus and was open to experimentation. By then I had already mastered the Sigma AF 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM, made sure it was dead in terms of bokeh, but left it for autofocus and sharpness.

Now I use it on the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II.

Appearance of the Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/50 ZE

The Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/50 ZE is small, especially when compared to the Sigma 50mm. It’s about the same size as a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II, but you can’t compare them in terms of build quality. Canon should be ashamed that they sell these imitation lenses, and the metal Carl Zeiss will outlive me.

Bokeh

This lens is good in every way, its bokeh is superb.

The Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/50 ZE blurs in flaky, even, uniform colors. Any mottled subject illuminated sufficiently will be turned into a fairy tale in the blur zone. It’s so beautiful.

Focus, sharpness

Focusing by hand. For me, the Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/50 ZE is comfortable and organic. Tailored for manual focusing, so it has a long stroke on the focus ring. This allows you to adjust the focus very accurately and then tweak it some more.

Sharpness is inferior to the competitor from Sigma. But it’s enough, sharpness is what it should be.

Color, contrast

No complaints. Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/50 ZE is perfect for color and contrast. Only Canon’s L-series lenses can reproduce color so correctly. Zeiss does it by default without focusing on it. Still, there is a 100 year technology gap between Carl Zeiss and Canon. The closest in color reproduction and micro-contrast I can think of is the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM.

Air

The 50mm gently and smoothly blurs your subjects and surroundings, thereby mimicking the image of the human eye. When we focus on the subject at medium range, the foreground and background do not blur into a smooth mush. We continue to see and be aware of them, but not as clearly. The human eye is used to this “airy” volumetric picture and a 45-50 mm fast lens is very close to it.

The telescope “flattens” the picture, makes it two-dimensional. A good example is Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM: it doesn’t make your photos look three-dimensional. The only lens I know of that is even more three-dimensional is the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM.

Film

In film photography the Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/50 ZE opened up a new side for me. Film is about color and halftones, about plasticity and dynamic range. The lens handles these things perfectly. I mean, it does it all better than the most advanced Canon lenses.  The result is that I get not only the color of film photography, but also the “air” of photos from centuries ago.

Overall impression

The Carl Zeiss optics are the best I’ve tried in my entire career as a photographer. The Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/50 ZE is my best lens: exceptionally creative and versatile at the same time. Old school: making lenses not for their intended purpose, but for photographers. This lens can’t ruin a photograph, it will do everything. The Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/50 ZE captures portraits, subjects, landscape, street, architecture and whatever else you have to. I don’t know what else to add to that.

Henri Cartier-Bresson photographed his entire life with one lens, a normal focal length fix. The average wedding photographer brings at least three lenses for five hours of shooting: 35mm, 85mm and 70-200mm. And who knows how many more lenses are left at home, not fit into the photo backpack. 

In fact, both photographers aren’t willing to learn for years, and photographic giants are producing new lenses by the dozens, advertising them left and right. Add in the purchased reviews of photography bloggers and it’s clear that today’s photographer is doomed to a relentless search for the perfect lens. How disappointed I was with the Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM, it’s a good example when a photographer’s lens isn’t up to the task.

How do you keep your sanity in a world of marketing chaos and not get distracted from what’s important – photography? How to manage to survive when Canon is selling 200 lenses simultaneously and is updating its lineup? How to buy a lens without being disappointed in it?

Choose a lens for its intended purpose

The purpose of the lens is your genre. Let’s say you’re a landscaper. You’re used to a wide angle of 24mm or less. How do you choose a new lens? Instruction from my bell tower, I act like this:

  1. If I need 24mm or less, I cut off anything that’s much larger. And if I decide on a fix, I don’t look at lenses with longer focal lengths at all. Otherwise I’ll get carried away with the gorgeous 35mm and who knows where I’ll go. By narrowing my choices with such a limitation, I’ll come out with 2-3 models. Agree, a radical filter.
  2. I’ll read reviews in at least five places. I will be most critical of the rave reviews and scrutinize the negatives.
  3. I will look at examples of photos. Prioritize my genre. I’ll pay attention to post-processing – bad lenses have a lot of photoshop, good lenses and b/w get realistic.
  4. I will try to try the lens without buying it. It’s not hard: there are rentals and photographers I know.

How to choose the wrong lenses

Buy Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM: a great macro lens, and 100mm is good for portraits.

Not suitable for portraits. It’s an ultra-detailed lens, it shoots portraits so much that girls go on a depression binge afterwards. It’s not every day that you see the imperfections of your skin under a microscope.

I chose the Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM. Now I have a versatile zoom for everything from 24 to 70 mm.

Wrong. Now you have a versatile reportage zoom at focal lengths from 24 to 70 mm. Sharp, fast and ruthless to beautiful faces.

By all parameters, the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM would suit me as a tripod. It’s bright (bokeh), versatile and cool. Now both landscapes and portraits.

Only a specific photographer should use this lens as a tripod. 35mm is not a portrait focal length, distortion turns portraits into caricatures. The f/2.8 doesn’t blur the background at such a small focus, and all the tests show that Canon, by increasing the resolution of new lenses, kills the bokeh. So there is zero artistry in it.

I have a little active baby and I want to take beautiful pictures of the baby running around with lights in the background. I chose the Canon EF Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM, all photographers praise it for the picture. I have a Canon EOS 650D.

You are in for a real disappointment: with the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM you take static photos and you learn it for a long time. And on a cropped 650D you’ll have 135mm instead of 85mm and you won’t have half the beauty of a picture which is hidden just in the edges of a full-frame picture.

I’m a wedding photographer now and I need a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM.

You don’t need it. It’s not a creative lens, and it doesn’t have the right focal length for this kind of work. I consider the Polentin to be the most suitable lens for weddings: full contact with the subject and the right geometry.

Conclusion

It’s wrong to be guided by someone else’s opinion when choosing a lens. Just because someone likes taking portraits with the Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II doesn’t mean you’ll like it. While it’s a very good lens, it’s not designed for portraits. And anyone who uses the Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II for that and still praises it is a big enthusiast or a liar. Either way, you will be disappointed to imitate it. You can take good pictures with any lens, but it’s easier with the right one. Choose the right lens, have fun, and take great photos!

Exposure is a key concept in photography. Especially in film photography, where you can’t see your images until you develop the film.

Let’s talk about proper exposure: what it means for the final result and how to properly expose. This is especially important given that we’re learning how to shoot properly on every film, and it’s all about getting the exposure right everywhere.

If you don’t understand the term “exposure” itself, it’s simply the amount of light hitting the film. The emulsion needs light to form a latent image. It’s a chemical process that requires light. It can be a lot of light, it can be little light. Our job is to give the film the right amount of light and that’s what we’re learning.

We begin by defining “transparent” and “dense” film negatives.

When a negative film is exposed and then developed, the areas that receive light appear dark and opaque, which is where the silver halide crystals form what we call the graininess of the film.

The light or transparent areas on the developed film negatives received less light and retained fewer crystals. When there is not enough light at all to activate the crystals, the emulsion remains completely transparent – without any light information.

Areas of the developed film that received a lot of light look dark, filled with crystals (“dense”). It can be difficult to distinguish hues in these areas, but such areas are usually more useful than areas where no crystals are forming. You can think of dense areas as paintings painted with barely distinguishable shades of black paint on a black canvas: it may be hard to tell what’s there, but it’s definitely better than a completely blank canvas with no image at all.

There is usually a better chance of recovering overexposed images (i.e., “dense” negatives) when scanned or printed than underexposed (i.e., “clear” negatives). Note that this rule is reversed for slides (positive film).

Shadow Metering

Some photographers advise beginners to aim the exposure meter at the shadows. This is more likely to exclude the brightest spots from the exposure meter calculations, giving readings with slower shutter speeds and wider apertures. This method ensures that the darker areas, which often suffer from loss of detail, get more light by allowing the bright (dense spots of the negative) to retain enough information.

However, in my experience, measuring shadows does not guarantee a good result.

If you point the spot meter at a dark spot in a brightly lit scene, your image will probably be severely overexposed with these camera settings.

As mentioned above, “dense” negatives are preferable because they can contain some information, as opposed to “transparent” negatives. But this method has a limit, which is easily overstepped by mindless light measurements, ignoring the bright areas.

Selective metering

The best exposure is achieved by ensuring that the key subject has the optimum amount of light on the film. After all, this is who you are photographing, and you need as much visual information on film as possible for your subject.

Everything that surrounds your subject should take a back seat when you are measuring your scene. The best tools for taking these measurements are spot meters, incident light meters and your own eyes.

Spot meters measure the reflected light from your scene in a narrow corner – a spot. They help you get spot readings, although they are not always built into the camera. In that case, I download a smartphone app like Lumu. Light measurement apps can be more accurate than built-in meters.

However, you have to remember that spot meters have to target 18% gray (see below). This means that if you are pointing at something white, your readings can cause underexposure in the midtones, and if you are pointing at something black, your readings can cause overexposure. There are two things you can do in these situations:

  • Find something in your scene that looks like medium gray, and measure it instead;
  • Estimate how many steps your focus point is darker/lighter than the average gray, and compensate your exposure meter reading with that.


For example, the mushroom in the photo above is light gray, so the photographer pointed the spot meter at it and corrected the reading by about +1 step to make sure it stayed bright at my exposure. The original value gave a shutter speed of 1/125s, after compensation it became 1/60s. It takes a bit of experience to know exactly how many stops to compensate for. Practice randomly measuring the reading using the exposure meter app on your phone.

Ambient light meters are suitable for complex light measurements, and with them you don’t have to worry about compensation. Instead, they measure the available light where you are measuring.

If the photographer were to use one on the same mushroom above, he would have to walk up to the mushroom and hold the incident light meter next to his hat, pointing to the light source. That’s not always practical, especially when you’re photographing objects that are far away or trying to take a quick measurement. Incandescent light meters, moreover, are expensive.

Sun Rule 16 guarantees a good exposure if your subject is in bright sunlight, you set the aperture to 𝒇16, and the shutter speed is about 1/ISO of the film. For example, a film with ISO 100 in bright sunshine and 16 would best be exposed at a shutter speed of 1/125. Of course, you can change the camera setting to 𝒇8 (add +2 stops of light) and 1/500 (-2 stops) to get the same exposure. Over time, you will learn how to set your camera settings just by looking at your scene.

18% gray

Every scene with white and black dots has many scattered shades. If we were to sort them and line them up according to their brightness, where 100% would be white and 0% would be black, the 18% mark would be perceived by the human eye as the “average” brightness.

The exposure meter will analyze your scene and use the 18% mark as a guide to set your camera’s shutter speed and aperture so that the average gray color roughly corresponds to the midpoint of your film’s dynamic range. For example, for ISO 100 film, your meter might show an aperture of 8 and a shutter speed of 1/500 second on a bright sunny day.

Film exposure is about detail, not brightness

Exposure is only the first step to the finished photographic process. In the darkroom, you can easily make your prints darker or brighter. Your scanner software will automatically adjust the brightness of your image.

The evidence of the quality of your exposure will only be visible in the negative itself and in the amount of detail you can extract from it. If you have given the film too much light, you may notice a change in color and a loss of detail in the highlights. Too little light will result in noise and graininess in the shadows, color shift and loss of detail in the dark spots.

The goal of exposure is to get as much detail as possible in the most interesting area of your scene.

The brightness of the final image can be corrected by scanning or printing.

The choice of exposure can be subjective

This article aims to get as much detail as possible in the area of interest. Following this advice, especially in combination with film with a narrow photographic latitude, can produce images that may appear very dark or very bright. Some areas may lose information, but this does not always mean the wrong exposure.

There are times when the photographer doesn’t care about preserving all the details, aiming for a certain effect. As long as he is happy with the results and the results match his vision, the exposure is correct.

We live in a time when most photographers were born in the era of digital photography. Why would they want to take pictures on film now?

Here’s a typical reaction to my film ad (a real comment):

What’s the point of film when you can apply all kinds of filters, even in mobile Lightroom, and it’s as good as film or glass. In general, the advantage of film continue to convince only the most stubborn fans, I already thought such a long time ago disappeared five years ago.

I just made a point about the alleged advantages of shooting on film. They only exist in the minds of adherents. It’s about the same as audiophiles who are convinced that gold cables transmit sound better than ordinary copper ones. Well, people skipped physics at school, what can you do? It’s about the same with film.

Let’s see… First of all, I’m not trying to convince you to switch to film. I’m not advocating film photography. And all of the following is my subjective and extremely one-sided judgment. I’m basing it on my own experience.

Now let's talk about film photography in the 21st century

Why do people take photos on film in the 21st century? In my opinion, to get this kind of result out of the box, without any processing:

Pay attention to color, dynamic range, hue, and plasticity. You can do this with digital photography. You might even find it a simple task. It is even possible that some of my readers don’t see it as a big deal and every day they use a preset to “fry” RAW into such great photos. That’s possible. But not me.

I don’t like sitting in an editor. I don’t like Photoshop with its twisted interface and logic. I feel sorry for my time with this nonsense.

I believe that all (exactly all) modern digital processing and retouching strives for one thing: to replicate a film photograph. I see that the highest quality and most expensive retouching actually looks like an ordinary film photo taken on professional film like Fujicolor Pro 400H. Digital retouchers have nothing else to look at. Only examples from the film era. Strangely enough, I’ve only recently realized this.

I see fancy instagram people selling their preset sets. I see retouching classes where they stamp out skin pores because modern lenses are now sharp as diarrhea and expose skin flaws with the frankness of a microscope. And it makes me laugh. Because the result of all this manipulation is a bonus. For free. For free. As a bonus. If you take photos with an old film camera for 20 thousand rubles.

And I understand photographers who love retouching. They are drawn to their roots, to the photography they saw in their parents’ albums and old magazines. These people hate to see the original RAW from a digital camera. I’m like that myself. I’m itching to do something with the digital camera source.

Clean even skin, proper skintone and artistic processing is already in the film box. A film photo doesn’t need to be processed. It needs to be properly prepared and you’ll be happy with the result in the fact.

Film makes you a photographer (that's not for sure)

Film makes you think. It makes a mediocre photographer into a good one. Or it won’t. That depends on your luck. But I can tell you: you won’t have as much money to spend on a film camera as you would on a DSLR or iPhone. You’ll be thinking before every shot: “What the fuck am I doing? Do I need this shot or is there nothing to it?

That’s the approach of mature photographers. Who take the least amount of shots with digital. Film teaches pragmatic photography, teaches “to see”. It teaches artistic taste.

Whether it teaches you, I don’t know. It doesn’t really depend on the film. Film is only a limitation that is necessary to start the process. It doesn’t make you a photographer by itself; our parents’ photo archives are an example of that. But I believe that film is one of the easiest ways to make yourself develop as a photographer. That’s partly why I take photos on film.

In my article I didn’t touch such charms of film photography as the manual mechanical technique, the manual magic of development, and the effect of waiting for the result (when you have already forgotten that you were photographing it).

All of these things I love, too. But it doesn’t define my love of film. I prefer Canon, Nikon, Minolta, Pentax electronic film tubes to mechanical cameras. And modern autofocus lenses. That’s solely because I haven’t found “my” mechanical film camera. I guess Leica will wait for me. And I’ll sell off everything else. In the meantime, the mechanics I’ve been using aren’t working for me.

As for the magic of developing, I’m a total ignoramus and prefer to develop in a darkroom, followed by film scanning.

As for waiting for the result, I should say that my preferred option for getting film photos is an hour after I shoot them. The faster I get them, the better I feel.

That’s my opinion. You may have a different attitude about film. That film is expensive, difficult, incomprehensible. That film is gone forever (no).

Why I take photos on film

I didn’t mean to hurt you. And I won’t talk about money anymore. Soul photography is not about money at all. Film photographers don’t count money.

Here’s my story, my experience, which explains to me why film photography is better.

I love to travel and I take pictures on trips. A typical trip is a backpack full of digital gear (never an amateur) and a film camera with 1-2 films.

I bring 2,000-3,000 digital photos from a week-long trip and develop a couple of films. I like less than one percent with digital. I like everything on film. The coolest and most soulful shots are on film.

I’m seriously thinking of not taking any more photos on my travels with digital, but shooting video with it. There’s film for photography.

I’m not trying to convince you to switch to film. I tried to summarize in the article what I talk about with my film customers. What they tell me, not what I tell them. Many just dabble or want to impress at an event. Some of them are hipsters who can carry the crappiest quality camera in their pockets.

But more often than not, film photographers have some sort of background: they are professionals or have done a lot of film photography in the past. They usually don’t deny digital photography. Neither do I. It’s just different worlds for them. Film photography has its own purpose: when you want to take pictures for yourself, for your soul, for the process.

The ILFORD HP5+ is one of the best known and longest lived films. The first HP (short for “supersensitive panchromatic”) was introduced in 1931. Today it is available in rolls and sheets from 35mm to 20×24 inches, as it remains one of the best selling black and white films ever made.

A brief history of HP5+

Ultrasensitive Panchromatic film (HP) was introduced in 1931. It was modernized and renamed HP2 in 1939, HP3 in 1941, HP4 in 1965, and HP5 in 1976.

1976. Ilford showed their new 400 ISO HP5 film at Photokina. Initially there was a worldwide shortage of this wonderful film. The first batches of HP5 were exclusively in 35mm format and sold only in Germany, because Germany was the most lucrative market.

The HP5+ was introduced in 1989. There is a reason Ilford uses plus or “+” in the names of their emulsions. HP5+ is in the same Plus group as FP4+ and Pan F+. The films in the Ilford Plus line are all the latest generations of “established” emulsions with ISO 400, 125 and 50.

Another well-known Ilford line is Delta, which uses more recent 1990 technology with finer grain (but also a narrower dynamic range) and a smaller exposure error tolerance.

Curiously, many of the improvements to the HP5+ over its predecessor appear to have been addressed to photojournalists (Photo Pro , Issue 4, 1989). One of them was the ability to fluff it to ISO 3200. And also the finer grain and slightly more detail in the shadows than its main competitor, the Kodak Tri-X.

Thirty-three years or 91 years since its introduction, the HP5+ is still popular with film photographers. Although the press no longer uses this film, it is much loved by those involved in the modern analog renaissance.

Grain structure, resolution, sharpness

When shooting at nominal sensitivity, the graininess of the Ilford HP5+ looks about the same size, perhaps a little more grainy than the Kodak Tri-X 400.

The Tri-X and HP5+ are often compared because of their similar age (over 80 years on the market), sensitivity (ISO 400) and application (for photojournalists).

Ilford doesn’t cite any grain size or image resolution measurements for the HP5+, although I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s identical to the Tri-X RMS 17.

In practice, the grain size of the HP5+ is not visible on mobile devices at 35mm scans (unless you zoom in). But if you want to avoid this on larger displays and prints, you’re better off shooting the HP5+ in medium or large format.

Like the Tri-X, the HP5+ has graininess, but it’s not critical It doesn’t ruin the image or the fine details.

The grain of the film can be smooth or sharp. Smooth grit is unnoticeable, but will take away some detail. Sharp grain can help bring out some of the fine details in your images. The sharpness of the grain can vary depending on the developer, although the film itself plays a significant role in its appearance.

The HP5+ gravitates toward sharp grain. In all formats and with most developers, you expect detail, even with soft lenses.

Dynamic Range and Contrast

On paper, the HP5+ shows 3.5 in about 12 steps of usable dynamic range.

In practice, the HP5+ can convey detail in difficult lighting conditions better than most (if not all) films. Because of its impressive dynamic range and great latitude, the film handles light better than some top-of-the-line 2022 digital sensors. Naturally, this makes the HP5+ suitable for beginners and for measuring light without an exposure meter using the Sunshine Rule 16.

The HP5+ behaves like a medium-contrast film at perfect exposure. However, it will give you more contrast if you underexpose it, and a little less if you overexpose it. All black and white negatives do this, though the HP5+ does it better than most: its shadows retain more detail than many comparable films (including Tri-X), and its highlights are less likely to be knocked out when overexposed.

If you want the best image quality, expose the Ilford HP5+ at ISO 400 and develop it in normal mode. You will not be disappointed.

Or you can measure the HP5+ at ISO 200 and develop it normally to reduce the contrast in scenes with dark/sharp shadows. Fortunately, this film retains a large range of tones in the highlights; this means that you can relatively easily “save” your highlights in Photoshop if your images seem too bright.

You can shoot on Ilford HP5+ film as if it were ISO 800 and develop it normally. The pictures will have great contrast, which you will all edit in post-processing.

However, if you use push or pull processing on the HP5+, it will likely become more sensitive to over- and underexposure and require more accurate metering.

PUSH and PULL Ilford HP5+

Under normal process, the HP5+ emulsion is surprisingly versatile. Its ISO sensitivity of 400 is ideal for a wide range of lighting conditions with most cameras, from bright sunlight to indoor lighting without a tripod. But film can also be exposed at ISO 200-800 without significant loss of detail. The HP5+ has a huge dynamic range; its contrast can be changed by digitally adjusting the exposure.

The film’s ability to withstand over- and underexposure, as well as its dynamic range, decreases slightly when you fluff or bullet the HP5+. Nevertheless, the HP5+ is known to retain its contrast profile better than most other emulsions. Ilford claims “good image quality” with an ekposition correction of up to +3 steps. But the Internet is full of examples of more extreme exposure and development processes with excellent results.

The Kodak Ektachrome E100 is a modern slide film developed by Kodak in 2017! I’ve been meaning to write this review for two years and now the moment has arrived! I take photos with Kodak Ektachrome E100 and now I can share my impressions.

Kodak Ektachrome E100 Description

The Kodak Ektachrome E100 is a slide (positive) film. I had it sitting in the freezer for over a year while I built the right set up for it. I want to squeeze the maximum color and contrast out of this expensive and difficult-to-handle film. That’s why I demand the perfect exposure metering from the camera and don’t adjust the exposure. I only shoot on slide on Canon film SLRs: the EOS 1N and EOS 3000. I don’t dare put it anywhere else.

The Kodak Ektachrome E100 requires a lot of light because it has an ISO sensitivity of 100. And if you want true color on a developed slide, that color has to be in your scene you’re photographing. The slide is the most authentic film. And the Kodak Ektachrome E100 is one of the most faithful slides.

It’s really not that scary. You just need to get your hands on it, figure out what light you need for the slide, have a good camera, and measure for midtones. Shoot like a 100. And look for color and the right light, without them there is no point in shooting with the Kodak Ektachrome E100. It’s hard to find a scene worthy of this film!

My impressions of the Kodak Ektachrome E100

I’ve been looking for an excuse to shoot with this film for a couple of years. I firmly decided for myself to expose it only with perfect DSLR film metering. Because only this class of camera allows me to shoot in my favorite “on the run” manner. Yes, that’s how boring I am, I like automatic (including focus), with precise metering and quick. I have an article where that comes through. I also shoot a lot of portraits. I love photographing people in general. And so I need perfect exposure with perfect skintone.

The problem is that my DSLRs were dying too fast. Now things have settled down, I’ve got working machines and it’s time for the Ektachrome. All that was left was to find a color.

I found color, shot 3 reels, developed and was looking forward to the package with developed film. Oh, that moment! That was the first time I’d seen a modern slide! I scrutinized the frames and admired the saturated colors, incredible contrast and very accurate color reproduction. The slide is a pain in the ass. But all the complications pale into insignificance when you hold a strip of color-matched film in your hands and realize that it couldn’t have been more accurate!

Color

The Kodak Ektachrome E100 was used by National Geographic photographers. I can see why. The Ektachrome E100 has the perfect color reproduction for me and for my scenes. Fantastically faithful picture on film on a viewing table. Which I don’t have, but I got out of it.))

The scanner doesn’t want to take all the color off the slide. And it can’t. It’s better to view the slide on film or with a projector.

Sharpness

Ektachrome gives a sharp image. It looks professional when I have the right focus. I gave the lens autofocus time in each shot. I cranked up the aperture as much as I could. I got great sharpness.

Grit

Many photographers go to film for the distinctive grain. The slide has no grain. Its sensitivity is not about graininess.

Colors are deep, rich and vibrant, but never cartoonish, as C-41 color film sometimes looks. The skin tones are perfect and realistic. Looking at Ektachrome colors is like looking at a well-preserved Titian painting that makes most other images look like fauvism from a cheap store.

How to photograph with the Kodak Ektachrome E100

Avoid backlighting. If you have a sunny scene, it needs bright colors. In my opinion, the Kodak Ektachrome E100 is best for bright but not contrasting scenes without direct sunlight.

I have the best photos on my slide where I found the right light, carefully measured the face, made everyone stand still and took the picture without moving. Frankly disappointing were the shots where I shot against the sun, in a hurry, or there were no bright accents in the scene.

Equipped with an x-mount lens mount, it is compatible with Fujifilm’s high-quality lenses and accessories, and has the ability to capture exceptional 4K video. Its 23-millimeter lens possesses a wide-angle perspective that is well-suited for capturing vast and expansive landscapes. Ricoh GR III

And finally, the number one on our list is the Sony Alpha 7IV. The Sony Alpha 7IV represents a major step up from its predecessor in every way. The camera provides the same 4K video at 30p, 4:2:2 video recording, and a 35mm full-frame sensor, but improved image processing allows the camera to capture more detail and natural color, especially in low-light conditions. The Alpha 7IV also offers better autofocus, a more flexible viewfinder, a larger grip, the ability to shoot with a 150mm lens, and enough user controls to help the photographer nail down any shot. Sony also packed three brand new features, including 4K time-lapse movie recording, slow-motion video, and 120 frames per second movie shooting.

The 4K movie mode alone will be a game-changer for filmmakers. We can’t wait to see what the creative minds in our community come up with. Note that the camera is still pricey, so you might want to check out something like the Canon T5i or Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX80 if you’re on a budget.

Kodak Gold (200/400 ISO)

A favorite for many, both because of its affordable price and because of the familiar color it gives. Kodak Gold is available in 200 ISO and 400 ISO (yes, the Ultramax is an overclocked Gold). Kodak Gold is considered an amateur film, but I took some of my favorite shots on Gold. Kodak Gold is famous for the most vintage picture you can get on film. It rivals only the Kodak Color in this.

What it’s good for:
Lifestyle.
Everyday photography.
A trip to a picnic.

Pros:
Cheap.
Great tones, great for general purpose photography.
Mutes colors and lightens blacks, giving your photos a faded/vintage look.

Cons:
Not considered a professional film.
Mutes colors and raises black levels, giving your photos a faded look (this can be either a plus or a minus, depending on how you look at it).

Kodak Color Plus 200 ISO

Kodak Color is, without exaggeration, an iconic photographic film. Its popularity is rivaled only by the Fujicolor C200. Many photographers are so accustomed to the Kodak Color image that they can’t switch to other films because they don’t think they’re film enough. Why? Because Kodak Color Plus dulls the reality, mutes and even strongly some colors and makes the picture slightly degraded. Kodak Color is the most amateurish, if I may say so, film and many like its non-professional nature.

What it’s good for:
Lifestyle.
Everyday photography.
Picnic trip.
A photo shoot with unpredictably vintage character shots.

Pros:
Cheap.
Degraded tones, almost off halftones.
Mutes colors and adds contrast.

Cons:
Not considered a professional film.
Not everyone likes portraits on this film.
Requires plenty of light. In cloudy weather, unimpressive and makes a lot of noise.

Fujifilm Superia X-tra 400 ISO

The Fujifilm Superia 400 is an amateur film from Asia. Film photographers who shoot color negatives are divided into two camps: the Kodak film buff and the Fuji film buff. That’s because the philosophy of these two manufacturers is different. Kodak films are warm, they reduce contrast (as a rule). Americans and Europeans like it. Fuji cools (takes you to the blues) and makes the greens brighter. This is the kind of character that Asians like.

The Superia 400 is more neutral in color (slightly cooler) because it is not only for the domestic market, but also for export. Its picture is usually liked in Europe and the USA. It is usually the one loaded in disposable cameras.


What it’s good for:
A versatile film: portraits, travel, everyday.

Pros:
Inexpensive.
Neutral color reproduction.
Saturated colors.

Cons:
Not a professional film.
Makes skin look orange in direct sunlight.
Scarcity.

Kodak Pro Image 100 ISO

Kodak Pro Image 100 is a semi-professional film. Yes, yes, it’s not a professional film. Don’t look at the fact that it says professional on the box. But under certain conditions it is so good that it can be considered a stepping stone into the world of Kodak professional films.

The Kodak Pro Image 100 performs best in portraits and wedding photography with good light. In principle, this is what it was invented for. The Kodak Pro Image’s element is well-lit locations in mode light (sunset-dusk) and in clear weather without direct harsh sunlight.

Instructions for use:
Shoot at nominal (ISO 100). Metering in low-contrast scenes by faces. In contrast scenes, measure by the brightest spot on the portrait subject’s face.

What it’s good for:
Wedding and Lovestory photography.
Summer (beach) travel.
Architecture in sunny weather.

Pros:
Inexpensive.
Makes photos vanilla.
Great at rendering skintone in the right conditions for itself.
Little noise.

Cons:
Still, it’s not a professional film yet.
Not versatile. Requires enough light.

Kodak Ektar 100 ISO

The Kodak Ektar 100 is the new color standard. The color reproduction of this negative film rivals that of slide film! This film is the most advanced in the Kodak lineup. In 2008 it was presented as “the finest grain color negative film on the market. This film is designed for daylight (sensitivity 100 units), which means that if you shoot indoors and outdoors, or in low light, this film, is not your choice. But in well-lit scenes, it has no competition. 

What it’s good for:
Travel. Preferably to the sea or Asia, where there will be a lot of color.
Landscapes. Especially in autumn with its riot of colors.

Pros:
Professional.
The most accurate color reproduction of all negative films.
Gives bright, clean, saturated colors.
No noise.

Cons:
Portraits are hard to get.
Low sensitivity.

Kodak Portra (160, 400, 800 ISO)

The Kodak Portra family is widely regarded as some of the best professional films on the market because of their excellent color balance and contrast, and their silky smooth flesh tones. Kodak Portra is ideal for shooting portraits and people (hence the name “Portra”), but also delivers great results in a wide variety of subjects.

Kodak Portra 160 is better suited to daylight and bright light. Kodak Portra 400 is a more versatile film that can be used in a wide variety of lighting conditions. Kodak Portra 800 is the best all-around film for medium to low light conditions.

The only drawback to Portra is its price, but if you want the most professional look possible, this is definitely your film.

What it’s good for:
Portraits.
Travel. Preferably where it’s beautiful.

Pros:
Surprisingly even skin tone.
Good balance of color and contrast.
Perfect for portraits and people.
Versatile (ISO range from 160 to 800).

Cons:
Doesn’t like open hard sun. Fine in mode light (sunset-dusk) and in well-lit locations with even light.
Expensive.

CineStill 800 ISO

CineStill 800 Tungsten is a film that is developed using the most common C-41 process. This differs from films like Kodak Vision, which require the expensive and rare ECN-2 development process. CineStill will make your footage look cinematic. You’ll get that cool tone that cinematography boasts and audiences love so much.

And CineStill will give you a fair sensitivity of 800 units and interesting halos around light sources.

Instructions for use:
Shoot at a nominal 800 units.

What it’s good for:
Cinematic staged daytime shots.
Staged shots with colored lights, neon, smoke, and other delights.
Night city, portraits in it.
Street.

Pros:
Honest 800 units. You can shoot at night (but not on a soapbox).
Beautiful cinematic color out of the box.
Halos around light sources.

Cons:
Need to know how to use this film.
Not suitable for sunny scenes.
Expensive.

ILFORD makes several black and white films. It’s not easy to make sense of all of them. This article will help you get acquainted with the different ILFORD films and choose your own.

Here are the black and white films we will compare in this article:
– Ilford Delta (100, 400, 3200).
– Ilford FP4 Plus.
– Ilford HP5 Plus.
– Ilford Pan F Plus.
– Ilford XP2 Super.

What are the differences between Ilford PLUS and DELTA PROFESSIONAL films? According to Ilford, the main difference between the two is that DELTA PROFESSIONAL films use a more modern emulsion. This gives less grain at similar ISOs.

Whereas PLUS films use their classic emulsion technology, which has a greater exposure latitude than DELTA films (making them more suitable for PUSH/PULL processing and more tolerant of over/under light).

To summarize:
DELTA PROFESSIONAL: less grain at the same ISO, cleaner and sharper look.
PLUS: more grain, better for push/pull, more tolerant of exposure errors.

Note: All sample images are shown as originally scanned without any post-processing for more objectivity in the comparison.

Ilford Delta 100

There are three different types of Delta films in Ilford’s lineup: Delta 100, Delta 400 and Delta 3200. The higher the ISO number, the lower the contrast and greater the grain size of the film.

With the Ilford Delta 100, you get amazingly sharp images with virtually no grain.

I love the deep contrast and fine detail this film provides, even if you have to sacrifice some light sensitivity.

This is a great film for shooting in bright daylight because you can shoot at a wide open aperture to get your favorite bokeh and isolate the volume.

Ilford Delta 400

The Ilford Delta 400 is an amazingly fine-grained and versatile film. If you expose it at ISO 400), you get a lot of medium tones that you may or may not like.

Ilford Delta 3200

The Ilford Delta 3200, as the name implies, has an ISO sensitivity of 3200But in most cases it’s better suited for shooting at ISO ~1000.

Its sensitivity makes this film ideal for low-light photography or capturing fast-moving subjects.

Ilford FP4 Plus

The Ilford FP4 Plus is a good all-around film that is best suited for good lighting. The original FP4 was released in the 1960s, so it has definitely stood the test of time. It has since been updated in the ’90s to the new improved FP4 Plus.

Ilford HP5 Plus

If you’re looking for a film that looks cool, look no further…the Ilford HP5 Plus has long been one of Ilford’s most popular films. And for good reason-it has medium contrast, a wide shutter speed range, and is perfect for action or documentary photography.

The HP5 was originally introduced in the ’70s and was upgraded to the HP5 plus in the late ’80s. Many consider it Ilford’s answer to Kodak’s legendary Tri-X 400.

Ilford Pan F Plus

The Ilford Pan F Plus is noticeably less sensitive (ISO 50), but how it captures landscapes with its exceptional tones and details is a masterpiece! The Ilford Pan F has exceptionally fine grain, outstanding resolution and sharpness and is best suited for bright conditions and sunny days.

Ilford XP2

The Ilford XP2 is a unique black and white film that does not appear in either PLUS or DELTA PROFESSIONAL. This film develops using the C-41 process, which is normally used for color films. Also, you can shoot it in the ISO 50-800 range.

This is one of my favorites, as the Ilford XP not only has beautiful tones and aesthetics, but also a lower price per developer.

Specialized Ilford films

This concludes our comparison of the “standard” films from Ilford, but it does have special films such as the Ilford SFX 200 and the Ilford Ortho Plus 80. The Ilford SFX 200 has an extended red sensitivity, which allows for infrared style imaging, while the Ortho Plus 80 is an orthochromatic film that is sensitive to blue and green, but not to red.

While some photographers think of film as the prerogative of hipsters trying to look cool, for most film photographers film is a more organic method of photography. It allows you to slow down, focus on taking pictures, and wait for results.

There are a number of reasons that push photographers into film, and let’s talk about them.

Film doesn't allow you to be sloppy

Film photography requires more brains than digital photography. Every time you press the shutter button, you pay. Under this burden of financial responsibility, you’ll more quickly learn how to manage camera settings and composition rules. Shooting a roll of film with 36 frames will cost you about $1 per image. If you shoot 200-300 frames at a time, as you do in digital photography, you’ll realize how cheap digital photography is and how frustrating it is.

When you can shoot a series of 100 images, you don’t have to wait for the right moment. Just shoot and you’ll find a decent shot in the series. Most commercial photographers do just that. You don’t have to worry about the right exposure because you see the image on the display and adjust the exposure in the process.

Film photography is not about hundreds of images. It’s about 36 frames, or even 2-5 frames. You control the exposure and composition in each shot.

With digital, it’s easy to become a lazy photographer because you have 100500 frames and your mistakes are offset by the amount of material. For 1000 frames, even a monkey on probability theory will get one. With film you will always be conscious and creative.

Film saves time in post-processing

Film looks great straight out of the camera, whereas digital photos can require hours of post-processing. Most popular editing presets mimic film. If you want a picture to look flawless without wanting to waste time on editors, shoot on film!

Digital photos styled like film are the photographic equivalent of oak laminate. Yes, it’s cheaper. Yes, it’s more practical. But it’s not oak flooring! All in all, film looks amazing and requires virtually no editing.

Film teaches you how to solve problems

In film photography, your ISO is fixed. You can’t change it when you load the film in the camera, because each film has its own fixed sensitivity.

You are forced to think. What if there is not much light and you are shooting at ISO 100? Can you slow down the shutter? Can you hold the camera with your hands without blurring? Or is it better to open the aperture and sacrifice depth of field? How do you get a great shot in difficult conditions? Film photography poses questions to the photographer, and answers only after developing.

Film is profitable

One shot on film costs about $1. That seems like a lot. But if you look at the cost of a high quality film camera compared to something like a Canon EOS R5 (about $5000 with lens), you’ll see that film photography can be budget friendly.

Even if you spend $1,000 on a film camera and lens, you have $4,000 left over for film. Quality film cameras retain their value. In fact, the value of many film cameras is going up. If you buy a film camera and sell it after 5 years, you can make a profit. With digital cameras, you invariably lose money and disastrously fast.

Taking pictures on film is fun

Ask yourself: what do you enjoy most about photography? Taking pictures or trying to figure out the best image out of 100 identical pictures? Do you enjoy seeing and spending hours editing a photo to make it look perfect? I can’t stand processing, especially when you compare it to the pleasure of taking pictures. It may be different for you, but shooting on film sharpens my skills. Film helps me get cool results right away and I spend less time at the computer.

Shooting on film is a great way to learn more about photography. It’s a reason to think about composition and exposure. Film can drag you out of your rut and immerse you in a new level of creativity!
